The base of Trajan’s Column (AD 113) is regarded as one of the best examples of perfectly proportioned ancient roman capitals. In this picture you can see how the sunlight and shadows interact with the letterforms. Some think that the serifs were used to help with legibility when the sun fell on the letters from different angles. It has also been said that the serif was simply a clean way to “finish” each letter. One thing we know for sure is that these letterforms served as a basis for all western type used today.
